Manilva: vineyards, sea and frontier

La Duquesa marina in Manilva with the Rock of Gibraltar in the background

Manilva is the most south-westerly municipality on the Málaga Costa del Sol, situated between Estepona and the border with Cádiz province. Its territory encompasses the hilltop village of Manilva and three coastal nuclei: Sabinillas, La Duquesa and El Castillo de La Duquesa. This geographical diversity offers a rich variety of residential and landscape options.

The municipality is celebrated across the Costa del Sol for its muscat vineyards, which have produced a sweet muscat wine since Roman times — sold at the local bodegas for remarkably modest prices. Manilva wine is a defining symbol of the area, and the September harvest festival (vendimia) is a much-loved local tradition.

La Duquesa Marina is the modern heart of coastal Manilva: a marina with over 400 berths surrounded by restaurants, bars and shops, with a lively atmosphere year-round. The view from the harbour towards the Rock of Gibraltar — especially at sunset — is one of the most dramatic on the entire Costa del Sol.

Lifestyle & Leisure

Mediterranean tranquillity with Gibraltar in view

Manilva combines the peace of an uncrowded Costa del Sol with the cultural richness of its surroundings and easy proximity to Sotogrande and Gibraltar.

La Duquesa Marina
La Duquesa marina, with over 400 berths, is the social hub of Manilva. Waterfront restaurants, terraces with views of the Rock and the lively sailing community create a particularly enjoyable atmosphere. It is also the departure point for boat excursions through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Natural Beaches
Manilva's beaches are long, tranquil and far less crowded than those in more tourist-heavy areas. Chullera and Castillo beaches stand out for their dark sand and clean water. The urban beach at Sabinillas is the most lively in the municipality, with a promenade and full facilities.

Vineyards & Culture
Manilva's muscat vineyards are unique on the Costa del Sol, producing a traditionally crafted sweet wine. Local bodegas welcome visitors and host tastings. The Roman Castle of Sabinillas and the Roman thermal baths of La Hedionda round off a surprisingly rich cultural offering for a municipality of this size.

Manilva's proximity to Sotogrande (15 minutes) and Gibraltar (20 minutes) opens unique possibilities for its residents. Sotogrande offers polo, elite golf and one of Europe's most exclusive marinas. Gibraltar, with its international airport and direct flights to London, is a key asset for English-speaking residents who travel frequently to the UK.

The Manilva property market is one of the most affordable on the Costa del Sol, with two-bedroom apartments at prices rarely found elsewhere on the coast. This makes it a highly attractive option for first-time buyers and investors alike, particularly those seeking strong holiday-rental yields.

Life in Manilva moves at a quiet, authentic pace. The village has its own festivals, a weekly market and a community of Spanish and international residents who value tranquillity and authenticity above glamour. It is, in short, the Costa del Sol as it used to be.
