Language

Living on the Costa del Sol without speaking Spanish is perfectly possible, but learning it will open doors you never imagined. Here is how to get started and what options are available in the area.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

On the Costa del Sol, English is very widely spoken and our team looks after you in English, German and other languages, so you do not need to master Spanish from day one. That said, learning the local language completely transforms the experience of living here: you integrate properly, make local friends and handle everyday paperwork with far greater ease.

Language schools and academies

You will find plenty of Spanish schools for foreigners all along the coast, offering intensive, term-long or evening courses. A very economical option is the Official Language School (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, EOI), which is publicly run. Private academies also offer small groups and flexible timetables.

Private lessons and exchanges

Private lessons are not expensive in Spain: you can find a tutor through small ads, online platforms or by contacting us. Another excellent (and free) way to practise is through language exchanges, very popular in Málaga, where you meet a Spanish speaker who wants to learn your language and you help each other.

Learning online and getting certified

Before you arrive you can make progress with apps and online courses. And if you want an official qualification to certify your level, the DELE from the Instituto Cervantes is the benchmark certificate, recognised internationally. The University of Málaga also runs high-quality Spanish courses for foreigners.

A piece of advice

Don't wait until you speak perfectly to give it a go. Andalusians are warm and appreciate any effort to speak their language; every little conversation at the greengrocer's or with the neighbours is a practical lesson that speeds up your learning more than any textbook.
