How the education system works
In Spain, schooling is compulsory and free in state schools from ages 6 to 16. The system is organised into Early Years (Educación Infantil, 0-6; the second cycle, 3-6, is free), Primary (6-12), Compulsory Secondary Education or ESO (12-16), and then Bachillerato (16-18) or vocational training (FP). University entry requires the access exam (PEvAU/Selectividad).
State, semi-private and private
There are three types of school: state schools (free, taught in Spanish), concertado schools (semi-private with partial public funding) and private schools. In state schools the catchment area matters a great deal: if you want a place at a particular school, make sure you look for a home within its zone. Around 30% of pupils in Spain attend private or semi-private schools.
International schools
The Costa del Sol has one of the largest concentrations of international schools in Spain, the preferred choice for many foreign families. There are schools following the British curriculum (IGCSE and A-levels), the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the American system, many of them members of the NABSS association. Prestigious schools such as Aloha College (Nueva Andalucía), Sotogrande International School, English International College and Swans International (Marbella) have been educating pupils from all over the world for decades. These are fee-paying schools and costs vary from one to another.
Spanish school or international?
There is no single answer. For younger children, the Spanish state school is an excellent route to integration: they pick up the language naturally and make local friends. For teenagers arriving mid-stage, or families who expect to relocate again, an international school offers academic continuity in their own language and system.
University
The University of Málaga (UMA) is a modern, well-regarded public institution with a wide range of degrees and a lively campus. Its Spanish courses for foreigners are also a common gateway for international students.
